III.10 · Conditions

Tulamben sits on the north-east coast of Bali, in the rain shadow of Mount Agung. The black volcanic shingle drops to twenty-five metres within fifty metres of the beach, and the USAT Liberty — a 1942 American military cargo ship sunk by a Japanese submarine — has been resting on its starboard side since the 1963 eruption pushed it underwater.

Most of the diving is shore-entry. The Liberty is the headline; the drop-off, the coral garden, and Seraya Secrets handle the rest of the rotation. We base from a small dive resort in the village.
