III.6 · Conditions

Mabul is a small populated island twenty minutes from Sipadan. Its sea-floor is dark volcanic sand, its coral cover is sparse, and the diving is consistently world-class — for one reason. The macro density is unmatched. Frogfish at the jetty, mandarinfish at sundown, blue-ring octopus on the night dives, ghost pipefish in the seagrass.

We pair Mabul with Sipadan permits because the rotation makes sense — wide-angle in the morning, macro in the afternoon. The crossing is ten minutes from Kapalai, twenty from Semporna.
